To the question of use of terminology related to the stop of bleeding

Objective. The aim of this study is to justify the use of terminology related to stopping bleeding.

Materials and methods. Conducted semantic, etymological and frequency analysis of the use of keywords in scientific publications of therapeutic and surgical profiles. Their search was carried out in the most popular Russian and foreign citation databases. The request was formed in Cyrillic and Latin letters. The search was carried out among journals of therapeutic and surgical specialties, the publication period of which did not exceed three years.

Results. Despite the incorrectness of the use of the term “coagulation”, it is incorrect to use it as a description of intraoperative stopping of bleeding, it is often used in publications of the surgical profile (10378 articles). According to the results of the frequency analysis in the publications of the therapeutic profile, the terminology associated with the description of the mechanisms of hemostasis and methods for its achievement is less common than in surgical ones. The term “coagulation” in the publications of the therapeutic profile is found most often in comparison with the other keywords (2769 publications in English and 739 in Russian publications). The term “hemostasis” is more often found in English-language publications (1026 articles). In articles of the surgical profile, the term “hemostatic” is more often used (number of publications 18810).

Conclusion. According to the results of the etymological and semantic analysis, the term “coagulation” is incorrect as a characteristic of methods for stopping bleeding, since it reveals a set of mechanisms of thickening of liquid media, including peripheral blood. The term “Coagulation” (3508 articles) prevails in the frequency of use in journals of therapeutic specialties, which reflects the problem of peripheral blood thickening in diseases of the cardiovascular system. In the articles of surgeons, the terms “Hemostasis” (14174 articles) and “Hemostatic” (18810 articles) are most often found. In contrast to the publications of the therapeutic profile, the results of surgical studies using the terms “hemostasis” and “hemostatic” suggest a process of local stopping of bleeding and do not mean association with the hemostatic system.
